ABOUT THE BLACK CAT THEATRE Black Cat Theatre is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization celebrating
Formerly OFF The CUFF Productions, the Black Cat Theatre was founded in London in 1984 with a commissioned work by English playwright, Peter Kenvyn, entitled Losing Tracks, which then moved to New York City. OFF The CUFF continued to produce new plays in New York for the next seven years before founding Bonhicket Repertory Theatre in Charleston, SC. It was in SC that the non-profit outreach wing, Piwacket Theatre for Children, was formed.
OFF The CUFF relocated to St. Louis in 1992, touring Piwacket shows and producing Mainstage Theatre, first at the Sheldon Concert Hall and then in Chesterfield with performances of Murder By the Book, Agatha Christie's The Mousetrap, Ira Levin's Deathtrap, and Tom Stoppard's Tony Award Winner The Real Thing, among many others. In search of a home the company moved back to the city producing Mamet's The Old Neighborhood, and collaborated with The St. Louis Black Repertory Company for 4 years presenting a New Play Series at the Grandel Theatre. Leopold Szor's world premiere holocaust play, The True Messiah, New Play Series winner in 1997, was produced at the JCCA and Washington University.
In 2005, Black Cat Theatre found its first permanent home in a 180 seat, New York cabaret style theatre in Maplewood, MO. Here the company will continue to provide quality professional entertainment to children and adult audiences through the production of Piwacket, Cabaret and Mainstage Theatre, classes, camps, residencies, and special events.
